If you haven’t tried it before, Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. It emphasis proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance and is so named after its creator in 1920, Joseph Pilates.
We met up with expert practioner Karen Raison who as Guest Editor today led a 7 minute routine designed to start or finish your day. She says: “Pilates has a strong mind/body connection, so you may like it if you enjoy yoga but need a more intense core workout. It’s great for strengthening and toning with a focus on your core while increasing flexibility.
“My journey into Pilates came about as a career change when I took redundancy 20 years ago from my initial career in project management within the retail environment.
I now teach in a health clubs, but mainly community based classes and 1:1 sessions in and around the Brentwood area. My clients come from all walks of life and different fitness levels. Pilates can improve posture and help with certain health issues. I offer lots of options and try to make each class I teach unique and different in some way to previous classes eg using small equipment such as balls and bands.
Some classes will have a theme eg strength or mobility or focus on certain areas of the body. We usually start standing in order to include some functional exercises more relevant to everyday life but then use a mat to work usually in supine, prone, side lying and on all fours.
I aim to include stretches to target tightness eg lower back, hamstrings, chest etc and try to encourage clients to think about their breathing, sometimes ending with a relaxation where this becomes the main focus. It is important to recognise that clients come to classes for different reasons must listen to their own bodies, therefore options are a vital part of any class. Almost anyone can do Pilates so why not find a local class and give it a go? As with any class there are different styles of Pilates so it is important to talk to the instructor beforehand and make sure your needs will be met.”
