Normally out saving lives and working with the local community, Liam Noll and Matt Norris from Essex County Fire & Rescue, gave up an afternoon to help us with our 3030 Essex campaign. Liam & Matt, along with Elaine are the 3 firefighters who lead the fitness recruitment program for new would be firefighters.
Becoming a firefighter is no easy task. It requires hard work, long hours of training, dedication and a sincere desire to help others. For anyone hoping to become a firefighter they must pass a fitness test to ensure they are up to the physical demands of the job. The events are stair climb, hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search, rescue, ceiling breach and pull. As guest editors they wanted to show just some of the tests they put the recruits through. Throughout the film they demonstrate the weight training that allows them to carry and extend the ladders and pull the water hoses. They recreate the ladder lift using weights and is a test of lower and upper body strength. The equipment carry is a test of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and stamina.
Matt & Liam say, “Don’t train for more than two days in a row and if you can only include 3 training sessions a week, alternate them so that you do two strength and one cardio and then vice versa the following week.”
